A reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s Othello
An exploration of Shakespeare’s intentions when writing Othello, exploring the play’s racial themes in a historical and contemporary setting and drawing wider parallels between immigration and blackness in the UK today.

Working with Shola has been amazing, he had clear ideas of what emotions he wanted the final piece to have with it’s audience.
For me this was an extremely challenging project not because of the setups, lighting or experimental nature of it, that was the least of my concerns. The main thing for me was not having the cinematography take away from the pwerful words of Phoebe Boswell. How can the piece be experimental whilst still having the audience engage fully in the spoken word. Subtlety was key here, from frame rates to framing to lighting in layers to create separation.
Aspect Ratio also played a strong part in this piece. Looking back at my notes there were 5 pages of why I believe it should be shot 1.78 as opposed 2.40.
For this project I opted to shoot on Alexa Mini with k35s, this particular set had interesting characteristics of creating unbelievably soft edges that I embraced whole heartedly.
Another thing Shola was keen on was out of phase lighting, which can be seen in the dark corridors but also with an added layer of in the exhibition gallery. I wanted to create something different – a movement in the air surfacing the 1000 yard stares an energy an aura which would resonate at different frequencies of the characters…
I am also very pleased for everyone on board that their works, efforts and craft will be realised in Sundance 2017.
